Alana Baby Dress and Bonnet

A beautiful summer outfit knitted in cotton, with details in angora yarn for size 4-6 months.

Bonnet

Size: 4-6 months


Materials

Knitting needles: 2.5 mm

Crochet hook: 1.25 mm

Yarn: 25 gr white pearl cotton #5; 10 gr pink angora yarn.

Decorations: 1 pink satin ribbon 1 cm wide and 1 m long.


Gauge:

In Stockinette stitch, 37 sts and 49 rows = 10x10 cm square.


Explanation of Stitches

Garter stitch

Knit all stitches and all rows.


Twisted stitch

Knit through the back loop.


Stockinette stitch

Row 1 (and RS rows): Knit all stitches.

Row 2 (and WS rows): Purl all stitches.


Peacock pattern

Work with the following distribution and color combination:


Row 1: knit 1, (knit 2 tog) repeat one time, (yarn over, knit 1) repeat one time, [(yarn over knit 1) repeat one time, yarn over, (knit 2 tog) repeat five times, (yarn over knit 1) repeat 2 times]* repeat stitches inside "[]*" till last set of stitches, knit 2.

Rows 2-4: work in stockinette stitch.


Color combination: rows 1-4 in pink angora, rows 5-8 in white (repeat this color combination).


Mock Cable Pattern

Row 1: Knit 1 st, (purl 2 sts, slip 1 st, knit 2 sts, pass slipped st over 2 knitted ones)* purl 2 sts, knit 1 st

Row 2: Purl 1 st, knit 2 sts (purl 1 st, yarn over, purl 1 st, knit 2 sts)* purl 1

Rows 4 and 5: Work sts as they present themselves.

Scalloped Edging (crochet)

Single crochet into 1 st (skip 2 sts, 5 double crochets into next stitch, skip 2 sts, single crochet into next stitch)*

INSTRUCTIONS

The bonnet is knitted starting at the crown.

With white pearl cotton, cast on 9 sts and work 30 rows starting with knit 1 st (yarn over, knit 1 st)* and increasing the number of stitches to knit after the yarn over by one, every RS row (=129 sts).

[repeat stitches inside ()* until end of row]


Place the first and last 9 sts on hold and continue with the middle 111 sts. Work 20 rows in stockinette stitch.

Work 19 rows in Peacock pattern.

Bind (cast) off all stitches.

Sew the crown sides together.


Neck Strip

Pick up 62 sts from the edge of the neck border: 22 sts from each side plus the 18 sts left on hold.

Work 2 rows in Stockinette stitch, decreasing 1x3 sts on the 1st row with the following distribution:

Knit 25 sts, knit 2 sts tog, knit 3 sts, knit 2 sts tog, knit 3 sts, knit 2 sts tog, knit 25 sts


Work 6 rows in Mock Cable stitch.

Work 2 rows in Garter stitch, knitting the yarn overs twisted.

Work 8 rows in stockinette stitch.

Bind (cast) off all stitches.


Finishing

With crochet and pink angora, make a scalloped edging along the front side of the bonnet.

Fold the neck strip along the center and sew it to the inside of the bonnet.

Weave in ends.

Insert satin ribbon through the neck strip opening.

Knit 2 tog = Knit 2 stitches together

mm = millimeters

RS = right side

st(s) = stitch(es)

WS = wrong side
