Baby Spring Romper

Updated: Jan 21, 2023

Spring is coming! Soon we will have to save those wool sweaters and booties and take out the cotton garments. This baby romper is ideal for the arrival of good weather and if you follow the instructions it is not difficult to knit.

Download the printable PDF files and have direct access to the pattern without being connected online.

My PDF patterns include with 3 file types, described below:

  • The Instructions file includes written instructions for all sizes, along with photographs, garment measurements, and any pattern charts used. By following this file, you can easily knit the garment.

  • The Booklets file, on the other hand, provides all the knitting stitches row by row in a table format, which allows you to mark each row as you knit and easily pick up where you left off, even if weeks or months have passed. It also includes explanations of stitches, measurements, and all pattern charts used.

  • Additionally, the Diagrams section offers a schematic of the full project as an added visual aid for knitters who may need extra guidance. With all these resources, I hope you will have a fulfilling and enjoyable knitting experience. The files include instructions, diagrams and row-by-row detailed indications of the stitches to knit. You will see how they make knitting easier!

Instructions

Front

Start from the crotch area. Cast on 30 stitches and knit in Garter stitch 14 rows, making 3 buttonholes in the 5th row:

  • Knit 3 stitches

  • Yarn over

  • Knit 2 together

  • Knit 9 stitches

  • Yarn over

  • Knit 2 together

  • Knit 9 stitches

  • Knit 2 together

  • Yarn over

  • Knit 3 stitches

Continue to knit in Garter stitch all rows until total length is 2 cm.

Increase 3 stitches from each edge, on the right side – 25 times 1 stitch (=80 stitches). Make the increases by doing a “yarn over” so it will create the holes to loop-in the satin ribbon at the end of the project.

Continue to work in Garter stitch.

When total length is 19 cm. switch to Mock Cable stitch following chart A.

Armhole: At 23 cm from total length, bind off on both sides, on each row 1 time 3 stitches, 2 times 1 stitch.

Neckline: At 5 cm from beginning of armhole bind off the center 22 stitches and continue to work each side separately, decreasing on the neckline side and on the right side rows, 3 times 1 stitch.

Shoulders: At 3 cm from beginning of neckline, bind off all stitches.

Back

Start from the crotch area. Cast on 30 stitches and knit in Garter stitch 14 rows. Start increasing on both sides – 3 stitches from each edge, on the right-side rows – 25 times 1 stitch.

Continue to knit in Garter stitch.

At 17 cm from total length, knit 46 stitches and leave 34 stitches aside for the left side of the back.

Back - Right Side:

Continue to knit in Garter stitch until you reach 19 cm total length. Change to Mock Cable stitch following chart A, except the last 6 stitches that are always knitted in Garter stitch to form the border.

At 3,5 cm from the back opening, make the first button hole. Make the next two buttonholes 4 cm apart each.

Armhole: At 6 cm from the opening, bind off on the right-hand side on the right-side rows, 1 time 3 stitches.

Neckline: At 7 cm from the arm hole, bind off 20 stitches from the left edge.

Shoulder: At 1 cm from the neckline bind off all stitches.

Back - Left side:

Cast on 6 stitches on the inside border edge and continue to knit in Garter stitch.

At 19 cm from the total length change to Mock Cable stitch following chart A, except the first 6 stitches that are always knitted in Garter stitch to form the border.

Armhole: At 6 cm from the opening, close on the right border, on the right side rows 1 time 3 stitches, and 2 times 1 stitch.

Neckline: At 7 cm from the beginning of the armhole, bind off at right edge 14 stitches.

Shoulder: At 1 cm from the beginning of the neckline bind off all stitches.

Finishing

Join the two pieces by sewing the sides from the armhole to the opening of the leg holes.

Sew the front and back shoulder straps together.

Sew the bottom edge of the back opening below the other edge.

Sew the buttons.

Using the crochet hook work the edging of the neckline and armholes with Piquitos edge stitch. For the bottom part of the armhole, only work the first row of stitches to avoid having a thick border on that area.

Divide the ribbon in 4 equal parts and loop-in through the spaces created with the increases in the leg openings. Sew the ribbon at the bottom on the wrong side of the garment with a few stitches, to hold them in place.
